The Raise Game

The “raise game” isn’t really a game because it isn’t fun. It’s an exercise. I just like calling it the raise game.

You will use the raise game whenever an exposure exercise such as looking at a picture, watching a video, listening to sounds or doing an interoceptive exercise does NOT raise your anxiety level.

With the raise game you TRY to raise your anxiety while doing an exposure such as looking at a picture. Really look at the picture and try to make your anxiety go up. This will probably mean you have to think about something awful to do with vomiting. Maybe you need to imagine that you are in the picture. Maybe you need to look at the picture and pretend that you’re standing right beside the person. You may need to recall a memory of vomiting as you look at the picture. Maybe you need to think about what vomiting feels like. Whatever it takes, try to make your anxiety go up. Then ask yourself if you can tolerate the number that it went to. No safety behaviours! You can click away from the picture or video, allow your anxiety to come down, and then PLAY THE GAME AGAIN. Keep playing the raise game until your anxiety will not go up no matter what you do, no matter how horrible your thoughts are.
